MING 37.02 Ghost: A Study in Titanium
In its latest release, MING has fully embraced titanium—not just as a case material, but as a unifying design principle—with the introduction of the 37.02 Ghost. While titanium has featured prominently in past MING references, particularly in its Special Projects Cave creations, the Ghost is the first to treat the metal as the core theme across nearly every component of the watch: case, dial, and, yes, even the buckle.
Design and Construction
The 37.02 Ghost builds on MING’s familiar 38mm platform. The case is constructed from grade 2 titanium—an uncommon and technically demanding material in watchmaking due to its ductility and challenging machining characteristics. Unlike the more commonly used grade 5 titanium, which is alloyed for machining ease and brightness, grade 2 offers a warmer tone and matte surface that responds differently to light. MING uses this to full effect, applying radial and circular brushing across the case and dial surfaces to play with contrast and depth in a watch that otherwise avoids traditional finishing techniques like polishing.
Watch shown on 6.5 in / 16.5cm wrist.
Despite its architectural detailing, the Ghost remains wearable: 38mm in diameter, 11mm thick, and 44.5mm lug-to-lug. Thanks to the grade 2 titanium build, the watch head weighs just 35 grams, making it roughly 25% lighter than its steel sibling, the Minimalist.
The case is topped with a domed sapphire crystal featuring double-sided anti-reflective coating and MING’s signature fill of Super-LumiNova inside the crystal—a technique that enhances nighttime visibility and gives the watch a glow that’s more atmospheric than directional. Water resistance is rated to 100 meters.
Dial
The dial is a two-part construction, also made from grade 2 titanium, and features the same contrasting brushing as the case. There are no applied markers or numerals—typical of MING's minimal aesthetic—but the dial's concave form and the way it reflects light creates the illusion of depth and layering. This treatment also preserves the brand’s characteristic "inversion" effect: a sense of dimension without the use of sapphire or openworked architecture.
Movement
Powering the Ghost is a customized version of the Sellita SW300. MING’s execution, dubbed the SW300.M1, features skeletonized anthracite bridges and a similarly finished rotor. Beating at 4Hz, the movement offers a 50-hour power reserve and is visible through the sapphire caseback.
Strap, Buckle, and Final Details
The 37.02 Ghost comes fitted with a grey goat leather strap and a brushed grade 2 titanium tuck-style buckle—another small but intentional decision to echo the material theme throughout the watch. As always with MING, lume is generously applied—this time in Super-LumiNova X1 blue—on the handset and inside the sapphire crystal.
Limited to 250 pieces, the 37.02 Ghost is available now at collectivehorology.com. As always, feel free to get in touch with your thoughts and questions. And thank you for supporting independent watchmaking.
