A Comprehensive Look at the Modern Czpaek Watch That Started it All
Today, we delve into the 40.5mm version of the Czapek Quai des Bergues, a watch that began the brand’s ascent as a rising star in independent watchmaking.
The Quai des Bergues is not merely Czapek’s first watch; it’s a timepiece that encapsulates the brand’s philosophy. Since its launch in 2015, the Quai des Bergues has been a celebration of heritage, innovation, and relentless refinement.
The original Czapek pocket watch that inspired the Quai des Bergues.
The basic design cleverly modernized a 19th century Czapek pocket watch. And its debut was met with widespread acclaim, culminating in the 2016 GPHG Public Prize—a testament to its appeal among industry insiders and collectors alike.
An Ever-evolving Collection
Initially released in a 42mm case with various metals, the Quai des Bergues has evolved significantly. Czapek introduced a smaller 38.5mm version, followed by explorations in dial designs and finishes, including guilloché enamel and a remarkable combination of both techniques. The movement also saw consistent upgrades, such as improved finishing and the introduction of openworked bridges and plates.
In 2023, Czapek unveiled the 40.5mm version, striking a perfect balance between the earlier sizes. This “Goldilocks” dimension offers a versatile fit, enhanced by ergonomic refinements to the case and its signature scalloped profile, ensuring it sits comfortably on a variety of wrists.
Technical Specifications
The 40.5mm Quai des Bergues is crafted from stainless steel, with a case height of 11.9mm (including the crystal) and a lug-to-lug measurement of 47.7mm. Inside, it houses the SXH1 movement, a manual-wind caliber designed in-house by Czapek and produced in collaboration with Chronode, a renowned movement manufacturer.
The movement delivers a 72-hour power reserve. And it's finished with openworked bridges, double open ratchets, a sandblasted main plate, heat-blued screws, hand-chamfering, circular graining and snailing.
The SXH1’s design draws inspiration from 19th-century pocket watches, marrying historical aesthetics with modern precision. Its meticulous finishing is a visual delight through the exhibition case back, perfectly complementing the case size.
The Dial: A Masterpiece of Craftsmanship
The dial of the 40.5mm Quai des Bergues is a showcase of Czapek’s mastery. Available in blue or black, it features a proprietary double soleil guilloché pattern, radiating from the sub-dials. These intricate designs are created using traditional straight-line engine turning by Czapek’s partner, Metalem. The precision and artistry of the guilloché work make the dial a standout feature.
The watch includes two sub-dials: A subsidiary seconds display between 7 and 8 o’clock and a dual-purpose sub-dial between 4 and 5 o’clock.
The latter sub-dial elegantly combines a 7-day power reserve indicator with a day-of-the-week display. This unique feature harks back to Czapek’s pocket watch designs, encouraging owners to wind their watch every Sunday—a romantic nod to tradition.
A Philosophy of Growth and Refinement
Czapek’s continuous pursuit of excellence is evident in every detail of the 40.5mm Quai des Bergues. From the ergonomic case design to the intricate dial finishing and the historical yet innovative movement, this watch embodies the brand’s ethos. Its blend of tradition and modernity resonates deeply with watch enthusiasts, making it a compelling choice for collectors.
The Czapek Quai des Bergues 40.5mm is more than a timepiece; it’s a narrative of craftsmanship, history and innovation. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or new to independent watchmaking, this watch offers a unique blend of watchmaking prowess and aesthetic appeal.
