The Ripples, Re-engineered from the Ground Up

The all-new Speake-Marin Ripples Skeleton, announced at Geneva Watch Days 2024, isn’t just an openworked version of one of the brand’s most popular watches—it’s been completely re-engineered from the ground up.

A New Chapter for the Ripples Collection

Launched in 2022, the Ripples quickly became a fixture among independent brand sports watches. Just two years later, the Ripples Skeleton represents not just a new reference but a complete re-engineering of the watch. It features an all-new, purpose-built openworked micro-rotor movement, new case proportions, and the addition of a micro-adjustment system to the bracelet.

Key Specifications

Let’s start by getting the key specs out of the way:

• Material: The Ripples Skeleton is forged from 904L stainless steel—a first for the Ripples collection and Speake-Marin overall. The case is highly finished with a mix of brushed and polished surfaces.
• Dimensions: The watch measures 40.3mm in diameter with a 45.5mm lug-to-lug distance. These are very wearable proportions, but what’s most impressive is the thickness—or lack thereof. At just 6.3mm thick, it’s 30% thinner than the standard Ripples model.
• Water Resistance: For a sports watch, water resistance is key, and the Ripples Skeleton offers 50 meters of water resistance.

The Movement: SMA07

Of course, the beating heart of this watch is its movement. The SMA07 isn’t an openworked version of an existing caliber; it’s an entirely new movement designed from the ground up to be skeletonized, produced, and finished in-house by Speake-Marin’s movement manufacture, Le Cercle des Horologers. It features a fully integrated tungsten micro-rotor with hand-finishing throughout.

The rhodium-plated skeletonized mainplate has a vertical satin finish, beveled micro-blasted profiles, and polished angles. The movement’s construction and finishing evoke the horizontal ripples for which the collection is known. The subsidiary seconds dial at 1:30 also features a rippled finish—a final nod to the broader collection.

Bracelet: Micro-Adjustment System

We’d be remiss not to mention the all-new micro-adjustment system. Few features have become more popular among enthusiasts in recent years. In the case of the Ripples Skeleton, buttons on either side of the butterfly clasp allow for 2mm of adjustment on each side, giving you a total of 4mm of adjustability—about half a bracelet link. It’s ideal for finding the perfect fit.
