A Breakthrough World Timer, Hiding in Plain Sight
The MING 57.05 Comet is here. It's a world timer, and it's a breakthrough — though if you handed it to someone across a table, it might take them a minute to figure out why. That's usually how it goes with MING.
The 57.05 takes its name from the de Havilland Comet — the world's first commercial jet airliner, which entered service with BOAC in 1952 and cracked the world open. Faster, farther, and suddenly you could be somewhere else by dinner.
It's a fitting reference twice over. That same era is when Geneva watchmaker Louis Cottier developed the worldtime system that has defined the complication ever since. The 57.05 is MING's contemporary answer to a complication born for exactly the world the Comet created — one where the MING team itself is spread across four countries and international travel is less romance than logistics.
The DST Solution
Here's the innovation: there are two bezels on this watch. The inner one is fixed. The outer one rotates. That's it. And it solves a problem every world timer has quietly ignored for ninety years. A traditional world timer is beautiful with standard time — twenty-four cities, twenty-four hours, the whole planet legible in a glance. Then March arrives, or October, and half those cities move an hour and the watch doesn't. You're left doing arithmetic.
MING's answer is to split the cities in two. Cities that don't observe daylight saving time stay fixed on the inner bezel. Cities that do observe it live on the rotating outer bezel. Turn that outer bezel one click — exactly fifteen degrees, positively detented on a spring-loaded ball — and only the DST cities advance an hour against the 24-hour scale. The rest don't budge, because they shouldn't.

A small aperture between eight and nine o'clock reads silver for standard time and red for DST, so there's never a question about which state you're in. Grip points are machined into the bezel edge to make the adjustment feel like something you meant to do.
The system is patent-pending, and as far as we know, it's the first of its kind. It's also, in classic MING fashion, deceptively simple — a mechanical solution to a mechanical problem, executed with a single click. No spreadsheet, no phone, no squinting at a conversion chart in an airport lounge at 5 a.m.
Forty Millimeters of 57-series
The case is MING's 57-series architecture in its fifth-generation form: 40mm across, 10.3mm thick, 47.8mm lug to lug, machined from 316L stainless steel. Triple-stepped lugs, which are the tell — nine individual components go into the lug construction alone, which is what lets adjacent surfaces carry sharply differentiated brushed and polished finishes that would blur together in a conventionally machined case.
It's rated to 100 meters, which matters, because for all the complexity underneath, this is a watch built to actually go places.
And of course it's got lume. MING does not do lume halfway. The handset glows blue. The 24-hour scale glows blue for daytime hours and orange for nighttime hours, so the day/night split reads instantly in the dark. The DST indicator glows red when it's active. And the box-style top crystal is laser-engraved and filled with MING's proprietary Polar White for the twelve-hour indices — markers that appear to float above the dial entirely.

The Pièce de Résistance
Then there's the dial. MING calls it the Comet Tail. It's a multilayered blue construction built from overlapping raster structures — repeating grids of fine lines, stacked with a slight difference in alignment. When two grids overlap like that, small shifts between the layers produce much larger changes in the pattern you see. The result is an interference effect that doesn't hold still. Watch the dial as the 24-hour ring turns and the whole surface seems to flow and reorganize itself.
It's the kind of thing that photographs poorly and lives beautifully. You have to see it move.
This is the through-line of everything MING has done since the beginning: watches that reward observation, that change with light and angle and time, that give you something new on the hundredth look. The Comet Tail might be the most direct expression of it yet.

The Movement
Inside is the self-winding Sellita for MING calibre 330.M2 — 25 jewels, 4Hz, roughly 50 hours of power reserve — visible through a sapphire exhibition caseback, with skeletonized bridges in brushed anthracite over a matching anthracite baseplate. It comes on a cobalt blue goat leather strap from Jean Rousseau Paris with quick-release curved spring bars, or on MING's Polymesh in titanium.
Final Thoughts
Limited to just 200 pieces, it's MING most accessible world timer ever. More importantly, it's quintessentially MING: an unconventional case, a dial that refuses to sit still, and a familiar complication rethought rather than reproduced.
