Introducing the Ressence Type 10 Dark Night

In-House Movement with a Space Age, Oil-filled Case

By Blake Buettner

Ressence is introducing an all new reference this week in the Type 10 DN, and in doing so places their new in-house caliber within an oil-filled case for the first time. The DN stands for Dark Night, a nod to the deep blue tone used throughout, blending the brand’s signature design elements within a new polished titanium case containing 538 components, yet weighs just 82 grams. The Type 10 introduces a refined evolution of the Ressence DNA that creates a seamless and organic transition between complications, dial, case, and strap. The result represents the first chapter of a new generation for Ressence.

The Type 10 DN is a monolithic expression of Ressence design themes. Each individual component has been brought together in a visually and mechanically cohesive manner to create what may be the most focused watch ever produced by the brand. This from a brand that has boasted a highly mature and consistent design language since their founding in 2010. The new Type 10 takes that a step further by focusing on the details that define each separate area of the watch, and blurring the lines between them. This is a form that looks like it could have been carved from a single piece of material.

This makes the Type 10 a tough watch to break down for consideration, but let’s begin with the case. Ressence has fashioned a new case shape for the Type 10, though it doesn’t stray terribly far from shapes we’ve seen previously. There are few sharp edges in sight across the 41.5mm diameter of the cushion style design, with a soft case wall presented in one flowing motion. The case is constructed from grade 5 titanium, and it is nearly at one with the bezel, which serves as the visual bridge to the dial, and brings textural contrast to the scene. The bezel itself is composed of 24 individual titanium segments, alternating between sandblasted inserts and linearly brushed surfaces so each catches light differently as the wrist moves. Very tight tolerances reduce visual tension between the spaces.

Moving to the dial is a seamless experience, with the domed sapphire matching the curvature profile of the case itself. Further, with the dial portion of the case filled with oil, all of the information within is brought directly up to the surface, accentuating the seamless nature not just of the design, but of the object itself. The first Ressence watch to use the brand’s own movement architecture was the Type 11, and the Type 10 is getting an iteration of this with the caliber RW-04, bringing a second time zone to the dial, alongside the hour and minutes, as well as a 120 second runner.

This is a tight set of functions on the dial, allowing for exceptional legibility. The oil temperature indication has been thoughtfully integrated within the hour satellite, and serves as the only aperture and clue that the dial is not a single floating display screen. Finally, the design of the indexes defining the second time zone and runner satellites is a distinct evolution of what we’ve seen from the brand, and fits the overall clean aesthetic at work in the Type 10. It’s important to keep in mind that these are the first steps into this generation, and this design is a base upon which to build. This is the watch that sets the tone.

At a glance, the Type 10 can easily be taken as a single unified form, but it is one that draws the viewer in for a closer inspection. In doing so, you’ll find some of the more interesting decisions that went into bringing the design to life. The subtle brushing of the bezel pieces are a good example of this, as is the shape of the bezel itself. The pieces at the top and the bottom of the bezel feature a different curvature than the others to accommodate for the slope of the case as it leads into the bezel. These are the kinds of considerations that allow for such an impressively seamless experience without compromising the vision of the design.

The bezel details alone speak to the level of production quality at work here, and allude to the level of care exercised throughout. It’s a clear indication of what’s to follow with this generation, to say nothing of how additional complications may be deployed within. Whatever the case, the Type 10 DN is a compelling look at what’s to come.
