The Arc II Glows Purple
Born of shadow and subtle menace, the Phantom is a darker, more elusive sibling in Arcanaut's Experimentals collection.
The Experimentals collection debuted in 2023 with the announcement of the Bonehead and Tiger Sh'Arc pieces which quickly sold out. In late 2024, these ambitious designs finally landed on the wrists of their new owners.
The Phantom revisits the complex, multi-layered dial construction first seen in the Bonehead. A solid disc of Super-LumiNova sits beneath a resin-injected layer of aerospace-grade aluminium foam, topped by a German Silver chapter ring — now re- engineered as a structural “carrier” for both lume and foam. The effect is no less hypnotic, but this time, it glows in violet tones that feel deeper, cooler, and more enigmatic.
What is the dial material?
The solid disc of lume that forms the base of the Phantom dial was kept at a thickness that promised the strongest possible glow/size ratio and topped with the resin-filled aerospace grade aluminium foam plate that had to be slimmed by 0.05 mm so that it perfectly filled the available space. A redesigned German silver chapter ring “cup” debuts in both the Phantom and Green Fairy models and reduces assembly time and dial stability.
Are those purple hands heated or treated?
The key colour for the Phantom is purple. Arcanaut chose this colour because it is a) one of the naturally achievable oxidization colours when heating steel and thus looks very natural in comparison to wilder tones, and b) because of how well it pairs with the uncoated German silver of the chapter ring. However, to achieve the iridescence for which their coloured hands have become known, Arcanaut opted to PVD coat the laser-cut stainless steel handset instead. This particular shade is both special and subtle and ties the whole design together, especially when considered alongside the casebook’s purple-cowled phantom.
Is the “skeleton framing” case decoration only available on these models?
The Bonehead was the first model they ever created with a different case decoration and Arcanaut fell in love with it. The Arc II case silhouette was already known for its architectural quality and this “outlining” hammered home its unusualness and gave it an almost graphical appearance. At the moment, this case design can be seen on the Bonehead, Phantom, Green Fairy, Garnet Goblin, and Chronomara pieces, but they hope to roll it out on selected D’Arc Matter models as well as upcoming Fordite 2.0 series.
