Gravity Equal Force

The P.03 Night Ops is based on Armin Strom's Gravity Equal Force, the world’s first automatic watch with constant force transmission. Gravity refers to the watch’s micro-rotor, which of course uses gravity to wind the watch. While equal force, refers to the watch’s equal force mechanism, which delivers consistent power to the balance, and in turn yields greater precision.

When a watch’s mainspring is either fully wound or almost unwound, the force it exerts on the gear train is uneven. In particular, when fully wound, it exerts extra force on the balance which slows the watch down. And when the mainspring is almost unwound, its force on the balance diminishes, speeding the watch up.

To address this, Armin Strom created their equal force mechanism, which prevents the mainspring from engaging with the gear train when either fully-wound or unwound. By using only the middle range of the mainspring’s charge, a more consistent or “equal force” is thus applied to the movement, achieving more accurate timekeeping.

This innovation is exactly what we love about Armin Strom – they're focused on pushing the boundaries of mechanical movement design to achieve the greatest accuracy possible. And with Armin Strom’s openworked dials, these mechanisms – in this case, the watch’s micro-rotor and equal force barrel – are on full display.

Night Ops: A Tactical Take on Armin Strom

When it came to the design of this collaborative watch, our goal was simple: draw out the unique character of Armin Strom's approach to watchmaking. To do so, we looked at other product categories with shared attributes, and found inspiration in tactical and technical outdoors gear.

Whether it's apparel, packs or tools like knives, tactical gear likewise values precision and quality. So we drew on its materials, finishes and colors to complement and accentuate Armin Strom’s highly technical approach to watchmaking.

Compared to the standard production Gravity Equal Force, the Night Ops has been extensively redesigned, including its blacked-out grade five titanium case, black textile strap, along with other special components and finishes. A few subtle, tactical-inspired details stand out: The back plate on the dial side of the watch is drawn from geometric patterns found on knife scales, and is hand-guillochéed by Kari Voutilainen’s dial factory, Comblémine. And then there are the movement bridges – similarly inspired by pocket knife clips – which have been milled and hand finished with contrasting brushed and micro-blasted surfaces.
